‘Sunless Shadows’ qualified for Batumi Int’l Film Festival

Iranian award-winning documentary ‘Sunless Shadows’ has been qualified for the competition lineup of the Batumi International Art-House Film Festival (BIAFF) in Georgia.

Mehrdad Oskouee’s 74-minute documentary film, made in 2019, will participate in the “CINEDOC program” which is the non-competition section of the 15th edition of the Georgian event.

‘Sunless Shadows’ is the story of five young women who are jailed in a small juvenile detention center for murder. Each woman describes the circumstance which led to the murder and her motives to do so.

‘Sunless Shadows’ was named as the opening film of the 2019 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands, which was the film’s first international appearance, leading to the festival's best director award.

Some of the latest accolades bagged by ‘Sunless Shadows’ include the Silver Horn award for the Best Director and the Student Jury award at the 60th Krakow Film Festival in Poland as well as the Special Jury Award from the 17th Big Sky International Film Festival in the US.

Recently, ‘Sunless Shadows’ competed in the 35th Munich Int’l Documentary Film Festival in Germany, the 15th Doc Edge Festival in New Zealand, the 39th Jean Rouch Int’l Film Festival and the 2020 Melbourne Int’l Film Festival (MIFF) in Australia.

Oskouee’s doc will also head to the 18th edition of the Zagreb Film Festival to be held on November 2020 in Croatia.

The flick is also the winner of a nom for the Open City Award at the 2020 Open City Documentary Festival set for September 9-15 in the UK.

Established in 2006, the BIAFF is dedicated to promoting cultural exchange, understanding, and collaboration through films from Georgia and abroad.

The 15th BIAFF is due for September 13-20, 2020.
